Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has announced the appointment of Iain Whyte as a new member to the Board of the Scottish Police Services Authority (SPSA).

Iain will be joining the SPSA Board as a Police Authority convener representative and will fill the vacancy on the Board that was created when Councillor Paul Rooney stood down earlier this year.

Mr Whyte - a Councillor with Edinburgh Council since 1995, has been a member of Lothian and Borders Police Joint Board for six years and has been Convener since 2007.  He is a member of the NHS Lothian Board and Chair of the East Lothian Community Health Partnership.

Mr. Vic Emery, Board Convener, commented on Iain's appointment:

"I look forward to welcoming Iain to his first SPSA Board meeting later this month and to the contribution that I am sure he will make to the direction and accountability of our organisation over the coming years."

As SPSA welcomes a new member to the Board, another member is stepping down. Alan Thompson, one of the two current independent Board members, has decided to step down from the Board.

Mr. Emery said, "I want to acknowledge Alan's contribution to the development of the SPSA over the last couple of years, in particular in his role as Chair of Audit Committee.

"We are already discussing further recruitment for the Board with Scottish Government to ensure we have a spread of skills and experiences that best fit the challenges and opportunities now facing SPSA."

SPSA anticipates that recruitment of another Board member will progress early in the New Year.
