Jill Saunders, Physical Education Instructor (PEI)

Jill has worked as a Physical Education Instructor (PEI) at the Scottish Police College for just under two years and was attracted to working for a large professional organisation with high standards.
Jill explained, "As a PEI at the College it is my job to provide new recruits with training in a number of areas from drill, physical education, fitness testing and uniform inspections.
"You really have to nurture the students as some can struggle. It's important that they don't give up and that they get over all of their obstacles while they're here. People on the streets aren't going to take the time to get to know you as an officer so you have come across in a confident, calm and professional manner straight away. There's no time for nerves or doubts. If you're assertive, people will do what you say. And you can't get angry - you have to compose yourself while maintaining an officer presence at all times."
Maintaining her own fitness is also a key part of Jill's role. She trains three or four times a week minimum, varying her routine from swimming to running and attending spin classes to help keep her motivated.
"I have to be fit and extremely well organised. Good time management is essential and with so many students passing through the College I have to plan my lessons well in advance."
Speaking of her role, it's clear it's not just a passion for fitness that motivates Jill to get out of bed in the morning.
"The best bit about my job is taking raw talent (new recruits), coaching and nurturing them and being immensely proud of watching them mature into confident police officers, culminating in their pass out parade after 15 weeks. The PEI is the first person to meet the students on day one, and is the drill instructor who marches them off the parade square at the end of the 15 week period.... a very proud moment - never a dry eye."
