Training and Development
At SPSA we are fully committed to the professional training and development of all our people. We want to support all of our colleagues to reach their full potential and to help them grow
We have a number of training and development opportunities, some of which are listed below.
Induction
We want to help all new colleagues to settle into their new job roles as soon as possible, which is why everyone is signed up to our extensive two day induction course. We want to get new colleagues motivated and introduce them to our business, and this starts at the Scottish Police College. You will attend an induction day at the College to learn about our different business areas and one of our HR Officers will take you through the core business procedures to help prepare you for your new role.
We want to make you feel at home right away and we also arrange time for you to meet your team, your new colleagues and receive a tour of the facility you will be working at.
Personal Development Review (PDR)
The continued success of policing in Scotland relies on the best possible staff performance. At SPSA we follow the ACPOS (Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland) Performance Development Review process which is designed to improve performance and service delivery by focusing on the achievement of objectives (what you do) and an assessment of the behaviors required to carry out your role (how you do it).
The PDR process is there to give a shared sense of purpose and direction and show how you can contribute to the overall objectives of the organisation but it also means that your performance is formally recognised and recorded and helps us to develop a personalised training and development training programme where required. It can be used to support selection and career development and supports the recognition of your achievements and successes.
ACPOS Professional Development
Although it may be many years since you left school, college or university, you are never too old to learn! All our people have the opportunity to further their career by taking advantage of the ACPOS Professional Development Programme. Especially designed for police staff and officers, you can further your education by taking a series of qualifications which are delivered by the Scottish Police College and a number of Scottish universities.
There is something for everyone and it doesn't matter what qualifications you may have or not have - it's possible to complement existing qualifications and the benefit is that the course content has been designed to make it relevant to your day-to-day work.
All the courses are accredited by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications framework (SCQF) and students can choose from courses such as HNC in Management and a Diploma of Higher Education Training and Development.
Further Education
SPSA is committed to providing a range of development opportunities to enable you to maximise your potential for the benefit of the business and your own career aspirations. Further Education is one of those development opportunities and in many roles in SPSA there could be an opportunity for us to support you with funding or study leave for Professional Qualifications. Further education has the added function of enabling you to achieve professional qualifications, skills and the knowledge necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of your post and we will consider all requests carefully.
